As of October 11, 2011 Thailands Chao Phraya River Broke free by collapsing the flood walls that were alongside the river. With the flood walls collapsed the Chao Phraya river flooded into the city of Nakhon Sawan causing the city to look like a very large lake. CNN reports reported that the flooding was due to an above average monsoon season that ocured in Thailand and Cambodia. So far the flooding has killed more than 450 people and is still threatening to make its way into bangkok.
The news feed that I read regarding this incident did not say anything abut the population of the area, but I know for a fact that Bangkok is highly populated and one can only hope that they have defense mechanisms and a procedure set up to make sure that they are prepared if the flooding were to get any worse. One thing that I think would be very interesting to look at would be whether or not this river has flooded this badly before in the past or if the walls have held their ground. The ideal map in my mind would be to look at past monsoon season totals for rainfall and than to look at the flooding probability of the river and see if there is a point where the river can no longer hold that amount of water.
